Rory's Rockets soar to National Big Bang Finals

Year 9 student Rory Jones has been selected to represent the North West region at the National Big Bang Young Scientists and Engineers finals in Birmingham which is taking place this week.

Back in July 2017 when Rory was still in Year 8, his name was announced as one of the winners of the regional heats at The Big Bang Fair North West with his project entitled ‘Chemical Rockets’. As part of the project, Rory created a series of rockets powered by chemical reactions. He has since showcased and demonstrated his rockets launching to visitors during the school’s Open Evening in September has been hard at work developing the project further ready for the national finals.

“Rory has worked independently on this fantastic project and he is an outstanding student ambassador for Science at Queen's Park High School. We can't wait to see him represent the school and present his 'Chemical Rockets' at the national finals.”

Miss Finola Sutton, Teacher of Science & Co-ordinator for The Academic Excellence Programme at Queen’s Park High School

“Rory really impressed the judges with his project and we’re excited to see how he does at the finals at The Fair. Going into its tenth year in 2018, The Big Bang Fair continues to be a great source of STEM inspiration for young people, representing an amazing opportunity for young visitors, their teachers and parents to get hands-on with a wide range of activities, workshops and shows, and engage in meaningful career conversations with professionals, all designed to bring classroom learning to life and inspire the next generation."

Beth Elgood, Director of Communications, EngineeringUK

Rory has been invited to attend the competition finals, which are taking place at The Big Bang Fair at Birmingham’s NEC this week, during British Science Week 2018. Here, he will vie for top prizes including the coveted title of UK Young Engineer and GSK UK Young Scientist of the Year.

“It was a really exciting moment when we found out that I got through to the national finals. All my hard work in Science Club had paid off.”
